Just toss a couple in with your PLA products, and they’ll help keep the moisture at bay.
Cleaning Your PLA Products
Now, let’s move on to cleaning. When it comes to PLA, you want to be gentle. Harsh chemicals are a no – no. Stick to mild, soapy water for most cleaning jobs. Fill up a sink or a bucket with lukewarm water and add a tiny bit of dish soap. Then, use a soft sponge or a cloth to gently wipe down your PLA products. Don’t scrub too hard, or you might scratch the surface.

Sunlight and UV Exposure
Sunlight, especially the UV rays in it, can be a problem for PLA. Over time, UV exposure can cause the color of your PLA products to fade. So, if you’ve got a PLA decoration or a set of utensils that you keep out on display, try to keep them away from direct sunlight. You can use curtains or blinds to block the sun if they’re near a window.
If you need to use your PLA products outdoors, try to minimize their time in the sun. For example, if you’re having a picnic with PLA plates and cups, set up a shade using an umbrella or a canopy. This way, your products will last longer and keep looking good.
Dealing with Color Loss
Sometimes, even with the best care, you might notice a bit of color loss in your PLA products. If that happens, there’s not much you can do to restore the original color. But you can try to prevent further color loss by following the tips I’ve already mentioned related to storage, cleaning, and sunlight exposure.
If you’re really bothered by the color loss, you can consider repainting the product. But make sure to use a paint that’s compatible with PLA. You can check with a local hardware store or do some research online to find the right paint. And before you paint the whole product, do a small test on a hidden area to make sure the paint adheres well and doesn’t damage the PLA.
Regular Inspections
It’s a good idea to give your PLA products a regular once – over. Check for any signs of damage, like cracks, warping, or discoloration. If you catch these issues early, you might be able to take steps to prevent them from getting worse. For example, if you notice a small crack, you can try to repair it with a PLA adhesive (which you can usually find in craft stores).
Maintaining Different Types of PLA Products
Different PLA products might need slightly different care. For example, if you’ve got PLA 3D – printed objects, they might have more intricate details that can collect dust. You can use a can of compressed air to blow the dust out from the nooks and crannies.
For PLA food containers, make sure to clean them thoroughly after each use to avoid any food residue buildup, which can not only look bad but also lead to unpleasant odors.
If you’re dealing with PLA fashion items, like jewelry or accessories, be careful when cleaning them. You might want to use a more delicate cleaning method, like just wiping them with a damp cloth and then quickly drying them.
